Which video games are the most cinematic?

Unplayable cut scenes, cinemas, or in-game movies have been a part of video games for more than 20 years. They help advance the plot, serve as a rest area for players and produce shock and awe like any good movie.

At MSNBC.com, we've taken at look at video games known for their memorable use of cinematics. Check out the list and then tell us which games you think are most cinematic.

I agree with Kayburs on this one.  I'm not sure how you left off one of the most stunning Playstation games (When it came to story/cinema)...Final Fantasy 7.

Gonna have to second that, kayburs- I hear they're reviving FFVII for PS3!! Now I have to get that system just for that game, and I haven't even finished Dirge of Cerberus yet!

Well, I googled a few resources... they all give different dates for rollout- all having already passed, the latest being the first of this month. Whether it's rumor or not, my fingers remain crossed.

That's funny considering it A. Hasn't been confirmed and B. is all just speculated right now. Would be really stupid for any media outlet to give something under those circumstances a date for rollout.

Hey, no need to get snarky. I'm just reporting what I read on more than one site- seems post-production is taking a while, but with all the confirmations (and there are a few), one is led to think it's a bit more than rumor.

        Just google FFVII remake ps3.

I'm not getting snarky, so please don't say I am. I did google it, and all that came up were "rumor" and "speculation" articles....oh and one article that said it was coming out mid august, but obviously that didn't happen LOL. There was also a link to a petition, there would be no need for one if they were already actually making it. My advise to you, especially with this industry, it not listen to anyone but the developer or publisher of the game themselves. A lot of gaming media outlets will take a rumor and say it's true, even though it's not, just to get a competitive edge Which is probably what the case is here.

I can't believe it either...especially Episode I (great game and my favorite of the series).

My vote goes to a game that holds a warm place in my heart to this day.  For quality and quantity in both its cinematics AND cutscenes, I have to go with Shadow Hearts: Covenant.  Hands down!

I am less angered by Double Dribble, then by the repeat of a publisher. Come on both Heavenly Sword, and God of WarII. This is a commonly reoccuring theme with these list is the double entry 2 games by the same people if the first was good why would the second or third or further on down the line loose that quality. I would say to avoid arguments you just gone with the Final Fantasy franchise, though personally I feel the the American 7 was the peak of Final Fantasy

I would agree about Final Fantasy and Call of Duty 4 (to a certain extent, since that game was broken up between a couple of different characters).

I liked some of the cutscenes in the Crysis games. Those scenes would switch so a superwide mode, the story elements of the game were cool, and the graphics gave a more cinematic feel.

Halo 3 and MGS4 certainly deserve to be on the list, no doubt.

F.E.A.R. was also cinematic in a "horror movie" kind of way. But it doesn't really deserve to be on this list.

Warcraft 3.  Blizzard's cutscenes are some of the most epic in game cinematics.  None probably can top Arthas' return to his home of Lorderon after attaining the runesword Frostmourne.

Final Fantasy VII had some of the most emotional cinematics.  EGM even went so far as to say "The Death Scene" (to not spoil things) is what taught gamers to cry.  I also believe Blizzard cutscenes are right up there, but Final Fantasy VII should have DEFINATELY made the list.

There is a difference between being cinematic, and having cinematics. Games that are cinematic have incredible visuals that are tied into the gameplay; such as Shadow of the Colossus, God of War, Dead Space, Gears of War to an extent. They are visuals that help draw the player into the game by being a part of the world and seemlessly mesh event with envrionment.

Games with cinematics, on the other hand, use them to accomplish events which would otherwise be impossible due to the limits of the game engine. Usually cinematics results in forcing the player to stop and watch, removing them from the action and reducing the involvement the player feels; as see in games like Metal Gear Solid 4, Final Fantasy. While this isn't always a bad thing, it isn't always good either (as evidenced by Metal Gear "I should have just made a movie" Solid 4). Too many cinematics ruins a game.

The best games are usually the ones that push the cinematic envelope without relying on cut scenes. My list would run a bit like this: Call of Duty (series), Dead Space, God of War, Shadow of the Colossus. I'm hard pressed for a 5th, but I could reasonably count Fallout 3 in that position over Elder Scrolls 4, I could also go with Freelancer as the space combat was reasonably impressive.

Double Dribble? Are you kidding me?

What about Xenosaga? Sure the cinematics don't compare in graphically quality to that of todays generation of consoles, but any game that has about 80% of it's cinematics released on a 2-4 hour dvd (I can't remember exactly how long it is at the moment, but it was long) has got to down as one of the most cinematic games.

Though, I cant say I was a huge fan of the series... I am floored that Xenosaga by Sqaure for the PS2 didnt make the list, that game had more cinimatics in it than any other game I have ever seen.

Love the Lunar:SSS, and Lunar:EB cutscenes for the PS1 remakes, those two games are by far still two of my favorites.

What were you thinking without adding Final Fantasy VII and Bioshock. Maybe there should be a top 10. But these 2 would have to make the top 5.

Final Fantasy VII should have, IMHO, made the list.

I'm partial to Bioshock, but I'm not sure I'd call it "cinematic"....since it's more "visual literature" than cinema, IMHO.

I'd also add the Wing Commander Series.
