What are your favorite PlayStation 2 games?

Developers have made more than 2,400 games for PlayStation 2. That's easily the most of any game console, which makes sense, considering that a whopping 140 million of the units have been sold since its debut eight years ago.

At MSNBC.com, we've listed our Top 5 favorite PS2 games. Check out the list and then tell us your favorites.

Star Wars Episode III's duel mode still has replay value, plus great graphics for the PS2.

And come to think back to my PS2 library, Ace Combat 5 never gets old, I'd definitely put that ahead of SW E III. Never picked up Shadow of the Colossus, but think I will now, sounds awesome.

p.s. I know E-III is a simple game and not for the hard-core gamer, but I like games I can play for 10 minutes and still enjoy, so that one fits the bill. But yeah, most others SW games are disappointing (Rogue Leader and certain levels of Rebel Strike for the cube excluded, those were great.)

I mostly agree with that list.

the Gran Turismo series is pretty much why i bought the PS2.  and the Grand Theft series is always a winner.

Wow, finally a good list. Although I probably would have called it the "Top 5 games to get people to try the PS2 again and a game for almost everyone." But that's a horrible title really.

Taking Dav5049915 for example, each of these games reachs out to a different genre and is one of the best in each of their respective fields. Action, beatem up, kind of a platformer all-arounder? God of War 2. Driving Simulator? Grand Turismo series. Free roaming in the truiest senses in terms of environment and gameplay? Grand Theft Auto 3. One of the Most Unique gameplay in the world? Shadow of the Colossus. I mean OMG (Oh my Gawd) you mean I can't kill this giant bird monster just buy shooting it 50 times with my arrows or slashing 40 times with my sword? What?! You want me to jump on it and crawl all over its body a strategically kill it?! Hardcore. And really who would have thought putting put more effort into the music tracks for a game type that's been around for years would have such a huge impact on the industry. Video games with fake Guitars or Drums? Already been done in japan. But Guitar Hero somehow took that one step further. Although I would have picked #2. The master tracks really do change the experience of the song.

Really its hard to make of Top 5 of this list but at least this one wasn't horrible. A top 50 would be more appropriate.

Come on now. The Original Socom game is what brought on-line gaming alive. Most people bought the PS2 for the on-line ability. Needs to be in the top 5!

I agree!  The Socom series has changed the way gaming will be played forever.  They brought the online genre game to the front of the pack.  I can't believe this game is not on here.  I miss my PS2 just for the Socom games.

I have two of the three.  GOW II and SOTC.  After those I would have to pick any of the Armored Core series, Ico, and GOW I.

Shadow of the Colossus, and God of War I agree on, Guitar Hero and GTO I can understand. But I think GTA is always overrated. There are far better games for the PS2 than GTA; like Onimusha, Resident Evil, Silent Hill, Beyond Good and Evil, Psychonauts... I'd have to say hands down Beyond Good and Evil and Psychonauts. They might not be as popular but they are by far, exceptional games and far better than running over hookers in stolen cop cars (even if each game satisfies a particular niche).

Personally I'd never buy peripherials just to play a game (Guitar Hero, Rockband) simply because the cost doesn't really pay for itsself when it is useful for just one or two games.

My son and I really enjoy the Sly Cooper Series. With a diiferent twist, using cutting edge vector cartoon type graphics, this game series is the shizit! As far as an 'action platformer' for PS2, this one is the best we've found!

I agree with GM Joseph - no Final Fantasy games make me a sad panda.

This list needs either Final Fantasy 7 or Kingdom Hearts 2 on it, imo.  Other than that, I agree with GTA and Gran Turismo - GT was the reason I bought my PS2 originally.

Might have something to do with the fact that FFVII is a PS game, and not PS2, just a hunch though.

                                Final Fantasy 7 wasn't on PS2.

However, FFX was worthy enough to be a top PS2 game.

It's like I said. It's more of a top list of top games for their genre which really should expand behind top 5 since there are so many genres. For appeal towards a wide range of audiences. These hit are the more general. RPGs: Final Fantasy, Tactical games: SOCOM, Rainbow, MSG, Surivival Horrors: Resident Evil and a bunch other genres get left out of a list so small. But I think its safe to say these selected games are some of the best canidiates to use to introduce new gamers, people moving beyond casual gaming, to the gaming world and to the best game system out there. PS2 4 EVAH!!!!!

Well, for some of you, FF7 was on the PS1, not the PS2, to be fair, though FFX or FFXII should definitely be on the list.  Kingdom Hearts or Dragon Quest might belong there, and I'm surprised that no one mentioned a sports game other than a racing game.

My all-time favorite game on ANY system is Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 3.

Wonderful, dark, intense game that's part Japanese-style social simulation and part dungeon crawler.

So many good games it is hard to narrow them down.

Even though FFVII started on the PS1, it still is a top seller for the PS2!
